What are first signs of hip problems?
The hip is a ball-and-socket joint that connects the thigh bone (femur) to the pelvis. Because it bears much of the body’s weight during walking, running, and sitting, it’s vulnerable to both sudden injuries and wear-and-tear conditions. Early signs of trouble are often subtle but important to catch, so that you can seek treatment sooner to prevent the loss of function and degeneration of your hip. Hip pain can affect anyone young or old.
Pain in the Hip, Groin, or Thigh
Aching or sharp pain around the groin, outer hip, buttocks, or upper thigh.
Pain may worsen with activity or after long periods of standing, walking, or climbing stairs.
Stiffness and Reduced Range of Motion
Difficulty moving the leg outward, inward, or rotating the hip.
Trouble bending down, tying shoes, or getting in and out of a car.
A feeling of the hip being "stuck" or "tight."
Limping or Change in Walking Pattern
Subtle limping to offload weight from the painful hip.
Uneven stride or feeling like the leg is weaker or shorter.
Clicking, Popping, or Grinding Sensation
Feeling or hearing unusual sounds when moving the hip joint.
Could indicate labral tears, arthritis, or impingement.
Pain Radiating to the Knee or Lower Back
Hip joint pain often refers to the knee or lower back.
Sometimes patients feel knee discomfort before realising the issue originates in the hip.
Night Pain or Discomfort at Rest
Aching while lying on the affected side.
Difficulty sleeping due to hip discomfort, especially in early arthritis or bursitis.
What are Common Cause of Hip Pain?
Hip pain conditions occur when bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, or soft tissues around the hip joint are damaged or irritated, leading to discomfort, restricted movement, or inflammation.
Common early causes are:
Hip osteoarthritis
Tendonitis
Labral tears
Hip bursitis
Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)
Muscle strain
Referred pain from the lower back or pelvis
